If you’re drawn to the world of skin, facials, and helping people feel better in their own skin — but have no idea where to start — you’re not alone. Most people don’t grow up thinking, “I want to work in skincare”, but they find themselves at a point where their career no longer feels aligned, and they start looking for something more fulfilling, hands-on, and people-focused.

That’s exactly where a lot of our students start — and, truthfully, that’s where I began too. But when I was starting out, there wasn’t a clear path into the skin industry. You couldn’t just choose to specialise in skin — you had to train as a full beauty therapist and go through waxing, nails, and massage, even if none of that was relevant to your goals.

I built Skin Philosophy to create the path that didn’t exist — a direct, professional route into skin and advanced aesthetics that focuses purely on treatments that work and keep clients coming back.

Where Do You Start If You Want to Work in Skincare?

Start by deciding what kind of work you want to do. Are you passionate about relaxing, hands-on facials and helping people with their skin health and confidence? Or do you see yourself offering advanced treatments like laser hair removal, skin tightening, or skin rejuvenation?

If you’re unsure, a Level 2 Facial Skincare course is a brilliant foundation. It gives you everything you need to start performing professional facial treatments and understand the structure and function of the skin — and it’s the starting point for moving into higher-level treatments later.

We’ve trained people from all sorts of backgrounds: nurses, cabin crew, mums returning to work, people in banking, sales, and hospitality. You don’t need to come from a beauty background, and you don’t need to know everything before you begin.

Do You Need to Be a Beauty Therapist to Work in Skincare?

No. And to be honest, that belief has held a lot of people back.

When I started out, there wasn’t a specialist skin route — I had to train in full beauty just to get near facials. I knew there had to be another way. That’s why I created Skin Philosophy: to offer people a way into the industry that was focused purely on skin and results-based treatments, not waxing or nails.

Now, it’s completely possible to train directly in the areas you’re passionate about — and build a business or career that aligns with what you actually want to do.

Is It Too Late to Start?

One of the biggest myths is that you need to be in your early 20s to get into the industry. That’s simply not true. Some of the most successful people we’ve trained started in their 30s, 40s, even 50s. They had life experience, confidence, and people skills – all of which are invaluable in this field.

Skincare is about more than technique – it’s about trust, presence, and helping someone feel cared for. That’s not something you learn at 18. That’s something that comes with real-life experience.

What About the Medical Side of Skincare?

If you’re from a medical background, or considering working in clinics offering laser, skin rejuvenation, or radiofrequency, there’s a clear route there too — but you still need to understand the fundamentals of skin.

Even medically qualified professionals often come to us for the basics first, especially if they haven’t trained specifically in skin before.

What Happens After You Qualify?

One of the most exciting parts of this industry is the flexibility. After you complete your training, you can:

You’re not tied to one path — and you can always evolve as your confidence and experience grow. We’ve had students go from our Level 2 course to opening their own clinics within a year.

What we focus on at Skin Philosophy is treatments that deliver results and keep clients returning. That’s what builds a strong, sustainable business.

If you want to explore your next step or ask questions, our team is happy to guide you. We’ve helped hundreds of people start careers in skin, and we’re here to make the process feel clear and achievable – not overwhelming.
